Rating: PG-13 (occasional dose of R-rated language, but I try to avoid it unless it has comedic purpose).
What is the main focus of your site?
Well, as to what my blog is about… It’s mainly a film blog, with an emphasis on box office and marketing. I do delve into political banter, but only when I feel that an issue hasn’t been more intelligently discussed by someone else, or I feel I have something unique to bring to the conversation. During the summer I did lots of weekend box office predictions and analysis, but the fall has given us very little in the way of box office worth writing about. I’m a hardcore Batman junkie so there will be conversations involving the movies, cartoons, and comic books if I feel something is worth discussing.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
My long term professional goal is to eventually acquire enough readers to justify selling a token amount of advertising, and then hopefully expand upon that.
Personally, I’m just doing what I’ve wanted to do for years, have my own film column. I was tired of waiting for someone to hand me my own blog on a reputable site, so I decided to stake out on my own. Worst case scenario, I have an archive of my writings for all time.
Do you prefer an interactive ‘community’ for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
I prefer complete interaction. For one thing, I’m not always right, and I always appreciate it when readers (politely) correct something or debunk an assumption that I’ve made. Second of all, discussion breeds ideas for later posts and contributes to just being more than a random lecture that no one reads. If people are commenting, I know they’re paying attention.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I started Mendelson’s Memos in March of 2008. It didn’t really kick into gear until late April, as the summer movie season was about to start. I try to have at least four new posts a week. That may mean once a day, or that may mean four posts in a single day followed by a brief pause. My day job has a fly by the pants schedule, so I never know how long my work day is going to be (sometimes it’s four hours a day, sometimes it’s sixteen hours). Also, my posts tend to turn into lengthy essays, so that limits the amount of individual blog entries I might make. I also am a husband and a father, so obviously this fun site of mine can’t always be a priority.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Batman (1989), Field Of Dreams, Airplane.
How did you hear about the LAMB?
I saw the link from He Shot Cyrus, which I occasionally read and comment on.
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that’s not listed above.
