What is the main focus of your site?
Grind My Reels is still a young site, but as it develops I hope that it will become a place for conversation about all things film-related, particularly things that “grind my reels.”
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I’m not surrounded by a large community of people who like to discuss films, so Grind My Reels is my attempt at creating my own community to do that very thing. I am currently published by a number of papers and the site acts as a great catalog of all my work.
I am currently developing a web series around “Grind My Reels” that looks to dissect things that bother me about films while also being an entry in the medium.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
This is a funny question because my full-time job is that I am a film teacher, so I’d like to think that I could occupy that role quite well. As a teacher, I don’t like to talk down to my students as if they are children but it is also important not to go over their heads. I’d like to think that I treat everyone as my equals and so I actively encourage an interactive community on my site. If you dislike one of my reviews please tell me why and I’d be more than happy to engage in a dialogue with you. That’s why I created the site afterall!
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
The site has been active since exactly July 8th, 2011. However, I’ve been semi-professionally reviewing films for several years in a number of publications.
I update the site about twice a week right now but would like to increase that number as the site grows. However, @grindmyreels on Twitter is constantly active with updates on what I’m watching and how I feel about it as well as other observations on the film world.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Annie Hall
How did you hear about the LAMB?
I heard about the LAMB from Brian Roan. He runs dearfilm.net and is on the lambcast from time to time.
