What is the main focus of your site? | The primary focus of Fist of B-List is the examination of martial-arts b-movies made either in Western countries or with Western stars from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Reviews explore the common threads throughout these films, such as the talent behind and in front of the camera, the quality of fight choreography, visual motifs, and typical settings and themes. The martial-arts film as a star-driven genre was popularized by Bruce Lee in the early 1970s, fleshed out for Western audiences by Chuck Norris, and then further translated through studio productions starring actors such as Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Wesley Snipes, respectively. Fist of B-List purposely avoids these more commercial endeavors in order to shine a spotlight on filmmakers and performers whose work catered predominantly to the home video market. |
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog? | With Fist of B-List, I’m hoping to create a platform with which fans of this unique subgenre — myself included — can share their thoughts on the movies they know, and discover new movies which may have eluded them. |
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students? | Since I started the blog, my main objective has been to uncover as many uniquely entertaining American martial arts b-movies as possible for both readers and myself. I really enjoy when readers contribute their own thoughts and opinions. While I recognize my ability to reach an audience as a writer, I’m a fan of film first and anything a reader contributes can only enrich the experience of watching and discussing these films. These films are popular with a small segment of the cinematic population so it’s always cool to connect with folks who have seen the same stuff; the resulting dialogue breathes new life into obscure and in some cases, forgotten work. I’ve made so many personal connections through this venture, which I never thought possible when I started. In that sense, writing about movies has been extremely rewarding. |
How long has this site been active for, and how frequently do you post updates to your site? (Note: sites must be active for at least three months for entry to the LAMB.) | Fist of B-List was started in August 2010. The rate of post frequency fluctuates; at the high end, I’ve posted every week; at the low end, I post just once or twice a month with the occasional gap. While recognizing the importance of keeping blog content fresh, I employ social media as much as possible to maintain both interest in my own content and a more general online presence with peers and readers. |
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more). | Big Trouble in Little China, Dawn of the Dead (1978), and The Wild Bunch. |
Name a movie you hate!! | – |
How did hear about the LAMB? If it was a LAMB, do you recall which one? | The first time I can recall coming across the LAMB badge, I was perusing Chuck Norris Ate My Baby. |
