Site Name: Trash Aesthetics

What is the main focus of your site (reviews, editorials, news, lists, etc.)?
I began Trash Aesthetics at the request of a dear friend who was overly concerned that I had been focusing for too long on overtly “academic” affairs, especially in regard to writing. As such, I began it as a sort of pressure-valve for creative output NOT associated directly with intersubjectivity or peer reviews or whatever – just a way to write without the constraint of academic scrutiny. I focus primarily on media analysis, but I filter these writings through a very personal lens which is a very different approach from when I am writing for a journal or edited volume or even a conference. I include personal thoughts, musings, recollections, harsh language etc. The blog is anonymous as I have a lot of students! When the semester is over, if they want the link, it’s theirs. So, to answer your question, I write A LOT about media as this is what I teach and am most passionate about.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
Good question. On the personal side of the ledger, I use it to get into the habit of writing regularly and without the restraints associated with my profession. I also use it, as noted above, as an anti-anxiety shot – to release pressures and write freely. Professionally? In a few years I might amass enough material to be of use for additional publishing.

Do you prefer an interactive ‘community’ for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
Another good question as I am a professor at a research one university, however I am completing a PhD, so I’m not there yet! I get enough of the teaching mantra at school. The blog is for FUN. So, definitely interactive.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I’ve been blogging only for the past 3 months. The frequency depends on how busy I am professionally, but the math says that I update about twice a week.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), L’Avventura (1960), Jaws (1975).

How did you hear about the LAMB?
I saw the logo on the very fine blog Anchorwoman in Peril.

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that’s not listed above.
I am especially concerned with the politics of taste and the confluence of high and low culture aesthetics. But, I am also interested in just having fun with this blog and so far, I have! I believe I’ve started a few interesting categories of posts that are becoming reoccurring columns.
