Reorganization
We have had a security breach here on the Lamb. This requires a substantial reconfiguration of the site. Most of the features are still here and will work. A new theme will be set up soon. Apologies to anyone who was directed to an inappropriate location.
As a special treat, here’s my draft commentary!
Rd1 – I was really hoping I’d have the first overall pick or one of the last picks, so of course I ended up with the second pick. Good Will Hunting is the no-brainer first pick, but after that? There are some very big name films — Saving Private Ryan, True Grit — with glorified cameos by Damon, which seemed like a bad way to go in the first round. Not sure if everyone loved Argo as much as the Oscars did, but it seemed like the way to go.
Rd2 – I’m in my glory now. I was hoping beyond hope that Dazed and Confused would make it my way… and it did. DJ gets the wrap-around pick, but I’m still guaranteed either Ocean’s Eleven, Saving Private Ryan, The Talented Mr. Ripley or Chasing Amy. I’ll be psyched if I can get Ocean’s Eleven — it’s the most fun film of the bunch.
Rd3 – Mwah ha ha!
Rd4 – Dylan crushes me by swiping Rounders. In a panic, I grab Contagion. Not a bad panic pick, but if I had to do it over again, I’d probably go with True Grit.
Rd5 – DJ makes things easy for my by picking The Bourne Ultimatum. Do I remember anything specific from either The Bourne Ultimatum or The Bourne Supremacy? Hell no. But Damon and Affleck are thin on franchises, and grabbing the last Bourne film seemed like a good value pick here.
Rd6 – I considered Boiler Room, but I couldn’t deny the siren call of the Askewniverse. Yeah, they only have cameos in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, but they’re great cameos in a fun, cameo-heavy film. This was a weird round, where everyone played an unspoken game of “Keep away from Shakespeare in Love.”
Movies I would have targeted if we stuck to the original plan and went eight rounds: Definitely Boiler Room… I’ve never watched it, but I would have grabbed Courage Under Fire on principle… It’s largely forgotten, but Changing Lanes is quite good… I would have given Daredevil a hard look. It’s not great, but it’s nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be… If all else failed, I would have gone with Paycheck with my last pick. It’s not one of John Woo’s best films, but I always thought it was a neat sci-fi/mystery.
I’ve never been more concerned about the state of sanity of a podcast’s participants than when I edited this show. Ocean’s Eleven being picked 12th! That’s a Top 3 pick, easy. Kristen’s team was weak until those last 2 picks, and as for whatever Robert was doing, I’ve no idea. Also, I don’t understand all the Rounders love. It’s fine, with Malkovich being the only above par element. Also also, I sort of really like Shakespeare in Love.
I think it makes more sense than you give it credit for. I’m not gonna go pick by pick, but I think the general thinking was to get (good) films that prominently featured one or both of them first. And sure – Damon might be 4th or 5th-most prominent in O11, but it’s still an ensemble and there are still good films that star one or the other that went first. If it was “just take the best movie!,” something like Private Ryan would go first.
As for you and Rounders and Shakes in Love – it’s clear to me that you’re just anti-American. 😀
Yep, Dylan and I were definitely on the same page.
I didn’t want to slag on anyone’s picks in my commentary, but the biggest stunner to me was actually Dogma in the first round. I love Dogma, think it’s an underrated satire, and would have happily picked it… in round 3.
If I lose this with the best War film ever made…A Coen Bros Western…A Kevin Smith classic…The highest reviewed and grossing Bourne film…A top ten romantic of the decade…AND GOOD WILL FRIGGIN’ HUNTING!!!!….I will just retire from drafting because I don’t know anything.
DJ, your list was the best, and the main reason was The Bourne Ultimatum. I also liked Dylan and Nolahn’s teams. They just needed a little more depth.
Your roster is damn strong. I don’t care for Chasing Amy, but it was a no-brainer pick at that point. The only reason I shied away from Saving Private Ryan and True Grit is that I don’t think of those as “Matt Damon movies”… and even then, I’d grab True Grit over Contagion if I could do it over again.
