We had a hard time deciding this month, which of the seven films put forward would be the MOTM for October. When the poll closed we had a tie. The scheduled guests were ask to chose between the two films that were tied and we had another tie. The Shepard finally made an executive decision and the horror film “Re-Animator” from 1985 was the selection.
Some guests on the show dispute that the 1980s were the golden age of horror, but the preponderance of shockers, slashers, sci-fi, and comedy flavored fright films is pretty impressive. It was also the pinnacle of practical effects before CGI took over the gore and dismemberment duties, and “Re-Animator” certainly qualifies as a classic from that point of view.
The film stars a magnificent Jeffrey Combs, but the head of actor David Gale steals every scene it appears in, including one of the most disgusting and notorious sexual assaults on film that you are likely to witness. It will horrify you through your own laughter.
Not everyone on the show is a fan of comedy in their horror movies, but in juxtaposition to that viewpoint, watching the film as a comedy worked for another guest more than the horror angle. Comb’s Herbert West accuses Dr. Hill of plagiarism, but the greater example of plagiarism in this film becomes a subject for the guests about halfway through the show. If you have seen (or maybe better said “heard”) the film, you may know what we are talking about.
The Exit Question also gets the guests talking about their own early exposure to gore in the movies, and if you want a treat, look for the illustrated podcast coming soon.
