The Movie of the Month for January was selected by over forty percent of the voters, apparently they have a nostalgia jones for fantasy films, like the champion of this movie Emily Slade does. Who could blame her? This is a very accessible family style fantasy featuring a CGI Dragon voiced by the mellifluous Sean Connery.
The CGI artists studied Connery’s face and designed a Dragon which could convey a wider range of emotions than you get with most movie dragons. The face movements also match characteristics of Connery himself. Our cast this week is pretty enthusiastic about the dragon.
The human stars come in for a little more criticism. Dina Meyer seems to be typecast according to some of our guests, and no one cared much for her wigs. Those of you who do not know Jay’s opinion of Dennis Quaid will get a primer on why he is problematic, although Richard rides to his defense. Everyone however was glad that Pete Postlethwaite was in the film.
We talk about music, Rob Cohen’s other film from this year, and why the fantasy film cycle seems to end with this entry into the genre. In the Rants/Raves and Reviews section, there is a bit of a debate about the latest “Scream” film, and a blissful though beer fueled endorsement of a recent MCU film. Emily provides a game which the guests are slow enough on for you to play along and probably beat us. So there is no reason that you should not join us for a trip down memory lane for the film you all voted for.
