The end of the summer brings us a man vs. nature film, and a LAMB community that is apparently on vacation somewhere. Only Lisa Leaheey was willing to go on safari with Richard this week, but we bagged a big cat and have the trophy ready to display here on the LAMB.
Idris Elba stars as a recently widowed Doctor, who had separated from his sick wife and must find a way to reconnect with his teen daughters who just lost their Mother. Of course what you do in that situation is go back to the Mom’s homeland and explore her roots. Unfortunately, this birthplace of the late Mrs. Samuels is in South Africa, where poachers have provoked a rogue lion into a series of attacks on humans.
Dr. Samuels, his two kids and their friend Martin end up as the target of the raging lion and suspense results. There are frequent comparisons made to “Jaws” and some other films featuring families struggling in a crisis against a disaster. Where on the spectrum do you go from a nature thriller to a horror film? Lisa has opinions and we discuss.
You know you have a couple of teachers talking when the phrase “Chekov’s Lion” is created to describe the inevitable outcome of the story. In the future we may have to speak of “HBO Max’s Dumpster” in a similar way. Anyway, you will get Lambscores and either a recommendation or a warning. Plus of course we have Rants/Raves and Reviews, including a discussion of movie marketing and the box office for this film.
