Lambcast #723 The King of Comedy-February MOTM

This month’s selection as MOTM came from a list of Blind Spots submitted by the host. A Martin Scorsese flop from 1983, which has grown in stature over the years, “The King of Comedy” starring Robert DeNiro. DeNiro is the frustrated, Rupert Pupkin, obsessed with becoming a comedy great. However, when he confronts his idol, talk show host Jerry Langford, with a plea to perform on Jerry’s show, he is only given the run-around. He does not give up, however, but persists in stalking Jerry until he gets what he wants. Eventually he must team up with his psychotic Langford-obsessed friend Masha to kidnap the talk show host in hopes of finally getting to perform his stand-up routine.

Todd Liebenow of Forgotten Films, Nick Rehak from Lyrical Innuendo and Matthew Simpson from Awesome Friday Podcast join Richard in examining this Dark “Comedy” and it’s widely admired performances. Jerry Lewis is great playing Jerry Lewis, and Sandra Bernhard is appropriately creepy as an even bigger fanatic than Pupkin. We talk about whether it is even a comedy, the cult

Sometimes you might feel some sympathy for the protagonist, but should you? Deranged fans are all potentially dangerous, even if they are unfailingly polite. The mask of being a comedian may not ever fall from their face, but we can clearly see past the facade.

Comedy gets a little more funny when we get to this week’s game, a fast version of Lambpardy, that will surprise no one with it’s outcome.
