The Summer of Love was also a year of change in the movie business. The Hollywood Production code was breathing it’s last breath, and the old guard of Hollywood was making way for the future. European films directed at the general American audience were being produced by the truckload, and French Directors were influencing American movies in more than one way.
So what do our guests this week talk about? Not “The Graduate” the number one film of the year. They barely mention “Bonnie and Clyde” the breakthrough of the year. “In the Heat of the Night” the compromise of the year did get a little love. Instead we hear about biker films, French Noir, Spaghetti Westerns, and some films that are downright weird. Of course after listening to the show, you will want to go and watch all of them, even the one’s that guest host Howard Casner didn’t think were very good.
Aaron Neuwirth has Japanese Gangsters, French Musicals, English Poverty Porn and more to get you in the mood of the swinging sixties. Todd Liebenow will sit with you in the backseat of the car at the Drive-In. There are kids movies, Roger Corman Psychedelia, and a highly mocked horror film to neck to. David Brook undermines his kung fu credentials and his English heritage by spending time watching movies starring guys with too many vowels in their names, but plenty of guns on their hips. Be sure to bring some parmigiana cheese with you to accent all the pasta based westerns he has on his list. Howard has more films on his list that you have heard of than anyone else on the show. (He will be hanging his head in shame for a week.
The guests sarcastically suggest that the show will be indelible, but once you listen, it’s not sarcasm, it’s just fact.
