October is Halloween Month and continuing our long tradition, the MOTM will be a horror film. This year we’ve decided to irritate many of you by focusing on re-makes of horror films, a trend that has existed for a century but which saw a peal in the last 20 years. The 1970s and 80s have been especially ripe for film do-overs, most of which are abhorrent, but not in the way we want. There have however been some solid reinterpretations of earlier films and those are our choices this month.

Pick a film to talk about, and we will almost certainly talk about the original as well.

Everybody’s favorite whipping boy of the last ten years, Zach Snyder, took on the George Romero sequel to the granddaddy of Zombie Films. He gave us fast Zombies and dark humor. The mall never looked so good, and now a days, it really does look like a place for zombies to hang out

Romero also had another film updated in the first decade of the new century. The military conspiracy film “The Crazies” gets another robust interpretation with a good looking cast and a dystopian view of problem solving. This one is directed by nepo-baby Breck Eisner.

Suspiria gets remade with a cast list of who’s who of horror film actresses, many from Europe, to complement the young American ingenues of Dakota Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz. A change in the color palate of the film is it’s most notable reason for existence.

Everybody’s favorite vampire film of the 1980s, gets a 3D update and a lot of CGI blood, but it still manages to be true to the spirit of the original. The late Anton Yelchin stars along with Colin Farrell, who takes the inverse approach to smooth talking Chris Sarandon in the original.
