A close vote determined the MOTM this October, but the last minute submission by Matthew Simpson of the “Awesome Friday Podcast” won out. Matthew selected Sam Rami’s 2009, PG-13 horror film, “Drag Me to Hell” and it goes to show that a PG-13 rating does not have to indicate a bad horror movie. On the contrary, this film manages to scare the audience and make us laugh at the same time.

Christine Brown tries to show a little backbone as a loan officer in a bank, and it all goes south immediately. Her boyfriend is supportive of her but has doubts about the fears she starts espousing after being attacked by an old woman that Christine denied a third extension for her mortgage. Far be it from us to stereotype the gypsy background of the old gal, but she starts uttering curses and we have already seen what happens in a prologue sequence.

There is a combination of practical effects and digital illusion in telling the story.  We have a brief discussion of some of the weaknesses of older digital moments, but we had nothing but respect for the physical performance of both lead Alison Lohman and the Lorna Raver who plays the “shamed” old woman with an unforgiving temper.

Damien Riley of “But I Digress”, shares his admiration for Miss Lohman and her performance. He also seems to be shopping for a future Mrs. Riley at times. We talk vomit, possession and goats throughout the episode and then finish off with a discussion of some of our favorite directors of horror films. We also digress in several spots to talk about the “Old Globe Theater”, Lawrence Kasdan’s “Grand Canyon”, and some other horror adjacent films, so Damien’s new site is well named
