We dispense with the Franchise Tradition on the April MOTM this year, since we have committed to genre based polls. For April we were looking for Animated films and the community selected “The Last Unicorn” from 1982 as the film they wanted us to discuss.

The film comes from the Rankin/Bass Production group, best known for their holiday Television specials, but they also produced the animated version of “The Hobbit” and “Return of the King”. Thge illustration styles will be very familiar to anyone who has seen those works, but for the theatrical film, the colors, details and lighting render this movie far more beautiful than anything from these producers that came before.

Our cast this week had a hard time commenting on things other than the attractiveness of the films images, but we do manage to get around to the voice cast, music and story. Matther Simpson from “Northern Reel”, Rachel Wagner of the “Hallmarkies Podcast”, Tony Cogan of the “Wickerman Podcast” and Bubbawheat from “Anthological” all take turns at trying to explain the soothing and mesmerizing effect the film has on viewers.

At the end of the show, we dip into the nostalgia zone to talk about films from our childhoods. It’s heavy on the 1980s but in a group reared in the VCR era, that is not a surprise.
